He lost a gift from his earlier days
Between shell and sand onshore
An obscure, silvery cross
vanished apparently forevermore

He touched his bare neck empty-handed
With a breathless and confused mind
Shrieking gulls and the roaring sea
Had made him deaf and blind

And through hours and days
He was searching high and low
Grubbed his fingers to the bone
In a desert-like sand, you know

He recognized sweet grassland’s smell
Inland movements and the open sea
And he caved into the sand
As deep as his feet could be

He was waiting for his day
But forever he would stay

After years one could see his figure
Nothing but skin and bone
Digging still deep down between
